A letter to the president of a foreign university(About my intent to donate Chinese books to overseas)
I am a wiriter living in Guangzhou, China, all in my life is a love of reading books, buying books and and collecting books. I think that at present there aren't a lot person who owns so many books personaly than what I does in Guangzhou.
Before my death, I am willing to donate my existing books to a foreign university library permanently. The content of my books mainly is Literature ,History, Philosophy, Calligraphy and painting, Art, Economy... The total number of these books is about thirty thousand, and their estimation of value is about one million and five hundred thousand RMB to two million RMB.
The reason why I choose to donate my books to a foreign university is that: If I donated them to the library of province, or of the city, or of University in China, there will be many duplicate ones. And many of them may once again be sell to old books stations or waste station, this is what I am not willing to see.
A man away from his native place is worthless but books will be not. To my point of view, if my books were donated to a foreign university library, they will be wellcomed by Chinese overseas and foreign readers who concerned about Chinese culture, China's problem, and China's research. I think these books would play a more important role abroad than they do at home.
In these books, there isn't many heritage books and copies that prohibited for abroad. My donation requirements is: the university library can provide three to five hundred square meters of space to store books, and provide the basic conditions for writing and researching to me in my lifetime; I am willing to be the Chinese books administrator of the library, and set up public lecture on Chinese culture regularly and serve the people.
Under the economic conditions permits, the library should provide a certain amount of funds every year for purchasing Chinese books from China mainland ,Hong Kong and Taiwan, to make sure the number of Chinese books continue increased in the library which can fullfill the readers metioned above timely.
If it is suitable, I can also donate some of my personal collection of works of Art (porcelain, calligraphy and painting, wood carving, four treasures of the study and miscellaneous) to the library permanently (This is will be the text assignment for another agreement).
